    Community Service

Being a part of the ROP program, students taking AP Environmental Science are required to serve 10 hours of environmentally-related community service (5 hours per semester).  We will have plenty of opportunities for students to choose from throughout the year including gardening, fruit harvesting, water testing, recycling, campus clean-ups and many events including:
    • Marsh Creek Clean-up (mid-September)
    • Yosemite Facelift (late-September)
    • Dutch Slough - planting tule (November)
    • MLK Day of Service (January)
    • Bay Area YES Conference (February)
    • Green Careers Conference (March)
    • Oakley Science Week (April)
    • DIG Plant Sale in Brentwood (May)
Students may, however, come up with their own ideas like helping neighbors with landscaping, working for an animal shelter or participating in a food drive or fundraiser for the needy.  As long as it benefits the community (not just one's own family) and can be described as a way to help the environment, it should count - up to 5 hours of credit per activity (even if you did much more)   Just be sure to discuss it with Mr. Sierra before-hand if you're not sure whether it applies.

Another possibility would be if you are passionate enough about a particular issue to start a petition or public awareness campaign.  Design a poster, flyer, brochure or even make a video about an environmental issue and be willing to share it with others.  By educating your "community", it provides a service to the planet and potentially ourselves.

CLICK HERE to open a sample signature page.  For every 30 people you can convince to take action, you will earn an hour of service credit for this class!

Many corporations give their employees a "day on" (rather than a day off) to continue getting paid while being of service to their communities.  This Monday is a declared as a National Day of Service, and there's no better day to earn your community service hours!  We plan to build a planter for Ms. Warren's garden in the J-quad while also planting trees in the Freedom garden.  I hope you can join us or find any other way to be of service on this day!
