Syllabus Algebra

Algebra 1

2019-2020

Ms. Dua

Algebra is the first of a series of math courses you will take in high school. In addition to covering the Algebra 1 standards for the year, we will cover the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice. These standards will help us develop critical thinking skills needed for the real world.

Semester Grade Breakdown

  • Semester Grade
    • 70% Assessments (Standards Mastery)
    • 10% - Final Exam
    • 20% Classwork (Work towards Mastery)

I will update grades regularly. I encourage you to check your grade on Aeries and communicate with me ASAP if you have concerns.

Assessments (Standards Mastery)

All assessments are grouped by learning targets, which are the topics you’ll be learning this year. We have three types of assessments you’ll see:

  • Target Check-Ins (10pts): This is your way to see how you’re doing with a target. You cannot retake check-ins but you can replace your score with an assessment score.
  • Target Assessments (100pts per target): Once we’ve spent time learning and mastering a target, we will have an assessment on the target. You may retake tests as long as you’ve followed the retake procedure.
  • Tasks: Throughout the year we will complete performance tasks related to the targets we’re learning. These will be based in real-world problems and require critical thinking and problem solving skills.

Classwork (Work towards Mastery)

  • Warm Ups
  • Target Classwork: For each target, I will give you classwork points based on completion of assignments that help you understand the target.

Retakes

In order to retake a target assessment you need to do the following:

  • Complete the extra practice or test corrections
  • Retake the target during lunch, study hall, or after school

Materials

  • Folder or binder
  • Pencils with erasers
  • Lined Paper
  • (Optional) Scientific calculator
  • Graph paper

Absences and Late Work

When you’re absent, you need to make sure to make up your work and turning in late work.

If you are absent on a test day, you need to check in with Ms. Dua to figure out when to make up your test.

Getting Help

Starting a new math class can be tricky. In order to stay on top of things, I suggest:

  • Math Lab in C119: open at lunch and study hall
  • HELP lab (Location TBD): M - Th after school

Classroom Behavior

I expect all of you to be positive members of our learning community. I ask for respect and a safe classroom from all of my students, and will give them the same respect and safety in turn. Failure to be a positive member of the class will result in the following:

1st offence – student will receive verbal warning

2nd offence – student will be asked to complete a reflection sheet

3rd offence – student will complete a reflection sheet that must be signed by a parent/guardian AND phone call home

4th offence – written referral

Cell Phone Policy:

Students may carry cell phones and MP3 players at school, but may NOT use them or have them on during instructional time unless being used for instructional purposes as directed/permitted by the teacher. Phones are not to be used to take pictures or video footage. All electronic devices must be turned off and stored in the student’s backpack/bag. Use during class time or inappropriate use will result in confiscation of device and disciplinary consequences. (see Student handbook)
