Below are some testing taking tips that can help if you are feeling anxious or overwhelmed when it comes time to take a test. Please also reach out to your teacher for some more helpful tips and the best way to prepare for your test with them.

    Road to Success

    • Be sure you have studied properly
      • Reach out to peers and ask how they prepare for tests
      • Create note cards / flash cards
      • Make sure you are studying the correct material
      • Study with a friend or adult who will help keep you focused
      • Study in a quite space with no other distractions such as your TV, netflix, etc.
      • Put your phone on airplane mode while studying so you are free from alerts / temptations to respond
      • Set timers and schedule breaks: study for 20 minutes, break for 5 minutes, etc. and use the alarm to keep you on track!
    • Get enough sleep the night before the test
      • Your memory recall is much stronger if you have had enough rest
      • Study a little each day instead of cramming the night before --> studies show that people who get enough sleep before taking a math test did better than those who stayed up all night studying
    • Listen closely to any instructions
      • As the teacher hands out the test, pay close attention to what they are saying and asking of you
      • Be sure to READ the instructions at the top before answering the question --> avoiding silly mistakes will help with your overall grade
      • If something is unclear please be sure to ask the teacher for clarification
    • Focus on addressing each question individually
      • As you take the test, if you don't know the answer, don't obsess over it
      • Start the next question, skip over ones you do not know and come back after you've answered other questions
    • Relax
      • Wiggle your fingers and toes or stretch
      • Take 3-5 deep belly breaths (when your stomach expands out) inhaling through your nose, exhaling through your mouth
      • As we all know, when we get nervous it is easy to forget things, but once you are able to take a moment to calm your mind and body, your memory will kick back in
    • Finished already?
      • When finished, take 5 minutes to review your test and check over your work
      • Make sure there are no questions you accidentally left unanswered
      • Read over your responses to check for errors or if there are things you would like to add
      • With multiple choice, usually your first answer is the one you will want to stick with
