• Be Test Wise - Use Test Taking Strategies

    1. REMEMBER:  Reading is an active process - writing strategically in your test booklet will help your performance tremendously!

    2. ALWAYS read the directions carefully, skim the test and plan your time.

    3. Underline or circle key words. Look for key words in the question stem which you can relate to key words in the answer choice.

    4. Restate difficult questions in your own words.

    5. Read the question BEFORE you look at the answers. Come up with the answer in your head BEFORE looking at the possible answers, this way the choices given on the test won't throw you off or trick you.

    6. Read ALL the choices in a question before choosing your answer.

    7. Make educated guesses when you are stuck - Eliminate answers you know aren't right. Use logic to choose from the remaining answers.

    8. Draw any appropriate diagrams, illustrations, or graphic organizers. If one is furnished, mark it up as needed to help you with the answer.

    9. Answer easier questions first and persist to the end of the test - test items do not get progressively harder. HINT: Easier items are scattered through out the test. Identify any questions you plan on coming back to review.

    10. Don't keep on changing your answer, usually your first choice is the right, unless you miss-read the question.

    11. Use extra time to check over your work. Keep a good attitude. Think positively!
