• Curriculum & Instruction

    The California Department of Education develops state frameworks and standards recommending what students should be learning in each subject area by grade and by course. The Liberty Union High School District curriculum is based on state and district standards in English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, History-Social Science, Physical Education, Health, CTE and Visual and Performing Arts. These standards set forth the content that students need to acquire by grade level.

    The state also develops an assessment and accountability program that measures student progress toward the standards called the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). To view CAASPP results, please go to Assessment & Accountability


    The district assembles a review committee that evaluates state approved textbooks/classroom materials and makes recommendations to the school board regarding which materials should be adopted for district use. The textbooks reflect what is required by the state standards. Final textbook adoption is done by the school board. The following are LUHSD approved textbooks.

    STANDARDS SCHEDULE & COMMON ASSESSMENTS
    Effective assessments are crucial for teachers in order to evaluate academic achievement of their students. In the Liberty District, common assessments are administered quarterly in the following classes: English 1, English 2, English 3, English 4, Intensified Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II,  World History, and US History. Quarter common assessments help guide teachers in the measurement of a student's mastery of standards. 
    Standards Schedules are developed to assist teachers in organizing universal access by students to content standards and ensuring that all students receive the entire curriculum.

    Each of our comprehensive high schools has an academy program. Academies are designed around career interests that fit student's personal educational goals, whether they are planning to enroll in college, enter technical training, or taking their place in the world after they leave one of our high schools.

    PREPARING UNIVERSITY SKILLS IN HIGH SCHOOL (PUSH) @ Freedom High School
    PUSH is offered to students in grades 9-12. Students must be enrolled in rigorous college preparatory courses. 
    Preparing University Skills in High School (PUSH) is an elective course that prepares students for entrance into
    four-year colleges. There is an emphasis on analytical writing, preparation for college entrance and placement
    exams, study skills and test taking, note taking, and research. In PUSH Senior Seminar, students prepare to be
    successful in applying to and attending college. Students will develop academic skills and prepare for entrance to
    college while answering the question "How have great leaders been catalysts for change?" PUSH Senior Seminar
    students utilize skills developed in previous years of PUSH.

    SMALLER LEARNING COMMUNITIES
    Each of our comprehensive high schools is designed around the "Smaller Learning Community (SLC's)" concept. Smaller Learning Communities take large comprehensive high schools and break them into smaller structures. Each SLC has its own assistant principal, counselor and secretary. In addition, SLC's help to:

                                    * increase student achievement through more rigorous and relevant curriculum and teaching;
                                    * promote teacher teaming and collaboration;
                                    * encourage more personalization between teachers and students
                                    * engage in continuous program improvement.
